The Chow Chow dog and eye problems: understanding and treating distichiasis”

Owner's question

"Hi! My dog, Chow Chow, blinks quite often and his eyes are red. I also saw some tears in his eyes. I have read that Chow Chows are prone to certain eye problems. What could be the problem and how can I help him?"

Veterinarian's reply

"Hi! The Chow Chow breed is indeed prone to eye problems, especially distichiasis. Distichiasis is a condition where extra eyelashes grow on the inside of the eyelid, which can irritate and damage the eye. This can cause your puppy to have red eyes and watery eyes.

To confirm the diagnosis of distichiasis, you should visit a vet who will examine your dog's eyes and make a referral to a veterinary ophthalmologist if necessary.

If distichiasis is diagnosed, treatment usually involves surgery to remove the excess eyelashes. Surgery is usually performed under local anaesthetic and is usually well tolerated by dogs.

It is also important to ensure that your dog's eyes are cleaned daily to reduce irritation and possible eye infections.

Eye drops or artificial tears can also help relieve dry eyes and discomfort.

It is important to note that although distichiasis can be treated surgically, it is common for extra eyelashes to grow back. This means that your dog may need regular eye examinations to ensure the health of his eyes.

With the right treatment and care, your puppy can thrive and live a happy, healthy life.

Thank you for being such a caring owner and I wish you the best of luck with your treatment!"
