Cockapoo and Allergies: what can we do?

Owner's question

"Hi! Our Cockapoo puppy, Daisy, licks and chews her feet very often. Is there anything I can do to help her? It seems like she's always itching something."

Veterinary answer

"Hi! From what you have described, it seems that Daisy has allergies. Cockapoo dogs, like many other breeds, can be prone to a variety of allergies, including food allergy, atopic dermatitis (environmental allergy), and flea allergy dermatitis.

Signs of food allergy may include itching of the skin, skin rash, hair shedding, diarrhoea and vomiting.

If you suspect that Daisy has a food allergy, talk to your vet about a special elimination diet that excludes common allergens (such as wheat, chicken and beef) to find out what is causing the problem!

Atopic dermatitis is an allergic reaction caused by environmental allergens such as pollen, mould spores or mites.

Symptoms can include ear infections, itching, red, inflamed skin, and skin developmental abnormalities. Treatment of atopic dermatitis usually involves avoiding allergens if possible and treating symptoms with medications such as corticosteroids and antihistamines.

Flea allergic dermatitis is an allergic reaction to flea bites.

Symptoms may include skin itching, redness, hair loss and skin development abnormalities. If you suspect that Daisy has a flea allergy, it is important to use regular flea treatment and keep her environment clean to reduce her exposure to fleas.

Although the Cockapoo breed is prone to allergies, symptoms can be well managed with a treatment plan developed with your vet.

The important thing to understand is that allergies are chronic conditions and usually require long-term treatment and follow-up!
